Jephanie's Cake 2.0

This weekend was the birthday celebration for our friends Jeff and Steph. Last year I made them each a cake because Steph loves chocolate and Jeff loves fruit. This year was a not an exception, but my cake-making skills have improved a bit.

Steph requested a chocolate cake in the shape of her favorite animal, a crab! Have a look at her cake.
I made a devil's food cake with chocolate cake and a cream filling.

We had to sculpt the body of the crab on a cake board. We used marble cake for the bodies of the animals.

We then sculpted the duck's body.

He is so cute!

The bodies of each animal was covered in chocolate buttercream and then chilled.

We made marshmallow fondant and tinted it appropriately for each animal. My mom was confident enough to work on one of the animals alone so she worked on the duck. Here is the duck getting a green head.

He then got a brown body. My mom said it looked like he was wearing a dress.

While mom worked on the duck I worked on the crab. His body was covered in red tinted marshmallow fondant and then placed on the cake.

Here is the crab with all of his legs and pinchers!

Here is the finished duck! I frosted the cake underneath which was banana chocolate chip cake with banana custard filling and whipped cream frosting. Mom did such a great job on the duck!

She said he looked real mad!

Here is the crab cake all finished! I ground up graham crackers and spread them on the top of the cake to look like sand. I also used a Witon chocolate mold to make chocolate shells.

Jephanie (Steph and Jeff) loved the cakes and so did everyone else at their party. If you have a look at the cakes it appears that the duck lasted longer than the duck.

We loved making these cakes and look forward to what they will request next year!
